Movement disorders encompass a range of neurological conditions that can significantly affect a person’s ability to control their bodily movements. Some movement disorders we treat on a regular basis include Parkinson’s Disease, Tremor, and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS).

Parkinson’s Disease:

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects movement. It is characterized by a range of motor symptoms, including tremors, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), muscle rigidity, and postural instability. Additionally, non-motor symptoms like mood changes, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairment can also be present. Parkinson’s Disease occurs due to the degeneration of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain. While there is no cure, various treatments, including medications and physical therapy, can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Tremor:

Tremor is an involuntary rhythmic shaking of a part of the body. It can occur as a symptom of various conditions, including Parkinson’s Disease, essential tremor, and multiple sclerosis. Tremors can affect the hands, arms, head, vocal cords, or other body parts and can range from mild to severe. Management strategies often depend on the underlying cause and may involve medication, lifestyle modifications, or surgical interventions.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS):

RLS is a neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations such as tingling or burning. These sensations worsen during periods of inactivity and can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to daytime fatigue. RLS can be a primary condition or secondary to other medical conditions. Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, medications, and iron supplementation, depending on the severity and underlying cause.
